Unlike landscaping or architecture, lighting is often meant to highlight and complement a space’s existing design rather than alter it. A quality lighting scheme can make or break a space, so the Signature team is driven to go beyond "good enough" in crafting the perfect lighting design for your space.
For this Mediterranean-inspired home, we sought to create a lighting solution that elevated the home’s clean yet warm style and transformed the backyard into the perfect entertaining space.
We worked with the landscape architect, AquaTerra Outdoors, to create an outdoor space that matches the home’s interior style. Our design spotlights the stunning pool, spa and landscaping designed by AquaTerra, which won them a Pinnacle Award for pool and outdoor living design.
Along the side of the modern pool, we added uplighting to prevent the gorgeous landscaping from disappearing into the dark edges of the property at night. Dual sconces mounted on either side of the outdoor seating area, chosen for their distinct Mediterranean style, create a welcoming glow and ensure the outdoor walls aren’t shadowed.
Moving out to the far edge of the yard, more uplights were installed to shine on the symmetrical trees and continue the lit ambiance throughout the space. We also added the same sconces on the walls to establish continuity.
Part of designing the perfect lighting scheme for our clients is knowing that more isn’t always better and, sometimes, even our favorite techniques aren’t the best option for the space. You may have noticed that we often install tape or ledge lighting along steps in many of our projects, but opted not to for this home. Because the riser is short and features a stunning Mediterranean tile design, adding a strip of lights here would only take away from and crowd the steps. Avoiding a light here ironically allows the design to shine even more.
Since there aren’t any large trees in the yard, we weren’t able to use moonlighting, so we looked for alternative ways to create the same bright night effect. The landscape lighting works with the existing light from the home to create an enveloping glow that cradles the space and ensures every inch is usable and can be appreciated even after the sun goes down.
